The Sporting Club Ilinden-Sofia is a carrier of the 40 years' old tradition of the sporting school in sambo within FD "Septemvri-Sofia". It is registered as a non-profit organisation under the provisions of the Law on Persons and Families — 1993, license No. 0011077 for development of judo and sambo sports with a registered address of operation Sofia, 45, Slivnitsa Blvd.

Throughout this period the traditions of the existing sporting clubs in sambo and judo have been actively continued, namely by the clubs CSKA, Mladost 98, Levski and Ilinden — Sofia. The results of the joint efforts have been awarded more than 1500 medals on the international and national calendar of competitions.

At present the club trains male and female groups from 10 years of age till veterans (masters).

The club's objectives for the next years are: increase of the sporting achievements and mastership, educating positive public awareness and active participation in the civil society.

The club participates in all national competitions in judo and sambo in female and male categories and in terms of age, i.e. a total of 32 competitions per year and maintains relationships with sporting organisations from the USA, Russia, France and Greece.

The last sporting achievement was the sambo world cup award in Nice, France for the year 2000 (ref. www.sambofrance.org).

The club members are 120 persons, the larger part are children from the housing areas of Ilinden, Krasna Poliana, Vuzrajdane and Lulin. 30 children come for the Pencho Slaveikov orphanage (formerly known as Ran Bosilek), who are socially handicapped children and orphans with outstanding achievements and performance in competitions.

One of the objectives of the club Ilinden — Sofia is to use the sport in order to prevent the children from the "temptations" in the street, to improve their physical and psychological fitness and successful realisation as fully fledged citizens of the Republic of Bulgaria.

In the hard times for survival of the Bulgarian sport and for maintaining its activity the club is having certain financial difficulties in terms of the improvement of facilities, equipment and preparation of the competitors.
