<h1>Easily Configuring an Azure DevOps Agent with Ansible</h1>

<p>With Ansible, it?s pretty darn easy to configure machines. Ansible even provides open sourced content though Ansible Galaxy for a plethora of different applications. Go to their site, find whatever it is you want, configure it and voil?, it?s added to your machine.</p>
<p>Sadly though, the Microsoft landscape is not so well represented in Ansible since most, if not all, of the content is geared towards UNIX based operating systems. Since the progressive shift towards cross-platform application development by Microsoft, things have been opening up and moving forward, allowing us to use a broader spectrum of tools.</p>
<p>With that being said, I?ve taken upon the task of contributing Microsoft and .NET oriented tooling in Ansible, starting with an Azure DevOps Agent role published in Ansible Galaxy.</p>
<h1>The What</h1>
<p>Configuring a self-hosted agent in Azure DevOps isn?t exactly rocket science but it?s the kind of thing you might want to automate. For example, you may need adjust your agent pool according to your ever evolving software requirements.</p>
<p>A self-hosted agent in Azure DevOps is represented by two specific roles:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Build agent</strong>: has build dependencies, checks-out the build and performs builds, tests and so-on.</li>
<li>Deployment agent:</strong> used in releases to be able to execute deployment tasks (i.e. run scripts, artifact download, etc.).</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>The agent is in fact a service that is installed on your machine which can communicate securely to your Azure DevOps organization and projects.</p>
<h1>The How</h1>
<p>With the assumption you already have basic knowledge of Ansible, setting up the agent role is as easy as adding it to your playbook</em> file and defining a few required variables:</p>
<p>Before running your playbook, you need to make sure the role is downloaded from Ansible Galaxy using the CLI as follows:</p>
<p>Then, when running your Ansible playbook, the role will execute the required tasks which configure your agent:</p>

<p>If you then inspect your Azure DevOps project, you?ll see your agent show up in the default pool (unless configured otherwise):</p>
